APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY CHIEF JUSTICE MANDISA MAYA
The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) welcomes the appointment of Justice Mandisa Maya as the Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa. On behalf of the attorney’s profession, the President of the LSSA, Mabaeng Lenyai, conveys the highest esteem on her appointment.
“Justice Maya will contribute to the ongoing transformation process of the judiciary. Her ascendency to the apex court will serve as a beacon of hope for scores of young women and make them believe that South Africa is a country of possibilities, regardless of gender, social or economic circumstances,” President Ramaphosa said in a statement.
The appointment is a historic moment for gender representation. The LSSA notes that in her capacity as President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa (SCA) since 26 May 2017, Justice Maya has displayed the qualities befitting the position of Deputy Chief Justice. Deputy Chief Justice Maya has displayed these qualities over a number of years, during her time as President of the SCA as well as being the first female chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga in 2021.
The LSSA is of the view that this appointment will ensure that the Rule of Law is protected and enhanced and wishes to thank Deputy Chief Justice Maya for her willingness to serve our country.
