Death of Mbeko Venfolo

The ongoing trend of deaths of legal practitioners and other members within the Justice system in South Africa greatly perturbs the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA).

The violent death of attorney Mbeko Venfolo, a legal practitioner killed in the mass shootings in KTC, Gugulethu, greatly saddens us, and we express our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We condemn this violence and offer the same condolences to the families and loved ones of the other four victims in the shooting.

Legal practitioners, by their very nature, are there to find solutions to problems and this level of violence in our country is a threat to the rule of law that underpins our society and is a vital element of the LSSA’s mission.

The LSSA brings together the Black Lawyers Association, the National Association of Democratic Lawyers and independent attorneys in representing the attorneys’ profession in South Africa.
