LSSA CONDEMNS THE COLD-BLOODED MURDER OF PROSECUTOR TRACY BROWN AS A HEINOUS ATTACK ON THE RULE OF LAW

The President of the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA), Nkosana Mvundlela, has expressed his deepest outrage and sorrow at the brutal and calculated murder of Regional Court Prosecutor Ms Tracy Brown, who was gunned down outside her home in Gqeberha on Thursday, 31 July 2025.

The LSSA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Ms Brown during this painful time. We stand in solidarity with the National Prosecuting Authority and the broader legal community in mourning her loss and in calling for justice.

Ms Brown was ambushed and fatally shot by four armed assailants in full view of her young child and partner. The LSSA strongly condemns this act of senseless violence which, regardless of the motive, constitutes a direct assault on the administration of justice and the rule of law in South Africa.

‘This horrific and cowardly attack on Ms Brown is not only a tragedy for her family and colleagues, but it is also a tragedy for the nation. It is an attack on every South African who believes in the protection and enforcement of the law. Prosecutors are essential to the proper functioning of our criminal justice system, and any act of violence against them is an attack on the very foundation of our constitutional democracy,’ said Mr Mvundlela.

The LSSA is deeply concerned by what appears to be an emerging pattern of violence against court officials, following the similarly disturbing killing of Prosecutor Elona Sombulula earlier this year in the Eastern Cape. These incidents represent a growing threat to the safety of legal professionals who, through their commitment to justice, put their lives at risk daily.

The LSSA calls upon the South African Police Service and law enforcement authorities to act with urgency and determination to bring those responsible for this atrocity to justice. The LSSA also calls for the immediate strengthening of security protocols and protective measures for prosecutors, judicial officers, and court officials nationwide.

‘As the legal profession, we cannot remain silent when those entrusted with advancing justice are targeted with impunity. The safety of legal professionals is not a negotiable ideal, it is an imperative if we are to uphold justice, protect the vulnerable, and ensure that the rule of law prevails,’ Mr Mvundlela stated.
