LAW SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA CONGRATULATES JUDGE PRESIDENT DUNSTAN MLAMBO ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS
DEPUTY CHIEF JUSTICE OF SOUTH AFRICA

The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) warmly congratulates Judge President Dunstan Mlambo on his appointment as the Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa.

On behalf of the attorneys’ profession, the President of the LSSA, Nkosana Mvundlela, noted: ‘The appointment of Deputy Chief Justice Dunstan Mlambo is a timely and fitting recognition of his unwavering commitment to justice, judicial leadership, and service to the people of South Africa. Deputy Chief Justice Mlambo has, over the span of his distinguished legal and judicial career, demonstrated a steadfast dedication to upholding the Constitution and transforming the justice system to be more accessible and responsive to the needs of all South Africans.’

Justice Mlambo brings to the Office of the Deputy Chief Justice an extensive and formidable track record in judicial leadership. He has served as Judge President of both the Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court (2010 to 2012), and since 2012, as the Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court, which is the busiest division in the country. Under his stewardship, significant innovations such as the Case Lines electronic filing system were introduced and successfully implemented, marking a turning point in modernising court administration in South Africa.

Throughout his judicial career, Deputy Chief Justice Mlambo has embodied fairness, empathy, and accessibility in the administration of justice. His ground-breaking judgment in the Oscar Pistorius case ushered in a new era of transparency by allowing live broadcasts of court proceedings, while his ruling in Enever v Barloworld Equipment South Africa reflected his deep understanding of human dignity and the complex realities faced by litigants.

Deputy Chief Justice Mlambo’s contributions extend beyond the courtroom. He has served with distinction as Chairperson of the Legal Aid Board of South Africa and as Editor-in-Chief of the South African Judiciary Magazine, further demonstrating his commitment to access to justice and public legal education.

The LSSA is confident that Deputy Chief Justice Mlambo will continue to promote the values of an independent, ethical, and transformed judiciary in this critical national role. Mr Mvundlela added: ‘As the LSSA we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Deputy Chief Justice Mlambo and wish him strength and wisdom as he undertakes the duties of this esteemed office.’
