Appointment of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo
The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) welcomes the appointment of Justice Raymond Zondo as the Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa. On behalf of the attorney’s profession, the President of the LSSA, Jan van Rensburg, conveys the highest esteem on his appointment.
The President exercised his constitutional responsibility and discretion in deciding on the appointment of Justice Zondo. This is after a rigorous interview process at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). The appointment by the President considers and ensures public confidence in the judiciary and our constitutional democracy, with its checks and balances.
The appointment provides continuity and leadership. The LSSA notes that in his capacity as Acting Chief Justice, Justice Zondo has displayed the virtues befitting the post of Chief Justice, which are wisdom, experience, compassion, eloquence, diligence, robust independence, impartiality, leadership and administrative skills. The honourable Chief Justice Zondo has displayed these qualities over a number of years, during his time on the bench.
This is also a historic moment for gender representation, with the intention to nominate Justice Mandisa Maya as the Deputy Chief Justice. The LSSA believes she is eminently qualified for this post.
The LSSA is of the view that this appointment will ensure that the Rule of Law is protected and enhanced and wishes to thank Chief Justice Zondo for his willingness to serve our country.
ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE LAW SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA, JAN VAN RENSBURG
