NADEL mourns the passing of NADEL stalwart, Mr. Jerome Mthembu

The National Association of Democratic Lawyers’ (NADEL) flags fly at half-mast as it joins the Mthembu family in mourning the death of Mr Jerome Mthembu.

Jerome was one of NADEL’s stalwart members and a champion of Human rights. He is a founding member of NADEL Bloemfontein Branch having arrived in Bloemfontein in 1994 as a practising attorney.

He immediately formed the NADEL Bloemfontein Branch in 1995. In 1998, he was deployed by NADEL as a Council member in the Free State Law Society (FSLS). He became the first Black President of the FSLS in 2001. Jerome served in various structures of both FSLS as well as the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA). He was a councillor from 1998 until 2011 and continued to serve in various committees within both Law Societies. He also served in various boards in the Free State Province. As a legal practitioner Jerome was an astute attorney having on occasion been invited to act as a judge both in the High Court and Labour Court.

Jerome was a committed and dedicated member of NADEL and he was a great friend and Comrade with a wonderful sense of humour. He was a humble, dedicated and hardworking practitioner who was always eager to assist the profession in the many roles he played be it at NADEL, LSSA or the FSLS.

He was a courageous fighter for freedom especially during the dark day of Apartheid.

Jerome will be laid to rest in Soweto. The details of the funeral proceeding are as follows:
Date: Monday, 10 December 2018
Time: 09H00 – 12H30
Venue: YWCA Hall Dube Village, Soweto

Today, members of NADEL’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and members of the NADEL Johannesburg branch will visit the Mthembu family to pay their respects at the family home in Soweto. Jerome’s death comes as a harsh reminder that our time on earth is limited and, as a result, the cause of equality and justice in our country should be pursued with great vehemence.

NADEL says long live the spirit of self-sacrifice of Jerome Mthembu. Rest in eternal peace Mthembu, Mvelase, Qhudeni, Gabadela, Ndaba, wena Jama ka Mnisis.
