Every four minutes a child is sold into the sex trade. This amounts to more than 2.2 million children each year. Every day, hundreds of helpless women and children are abducted and forcefully sold like animals into this underground industry that is the fastest growing, second only to the illegal drug trade. According to some estimates, approximately 80 per cent of trafficking involves sexual exploitation and 19 per cent involves labour exploitation. Studies estimate that there are approximately 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today.
There are many organisations worldwide working towards eradicating this plague. One such organisation is the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) has also joined in to end the plight of many helpless people. In so doing NADEL will host a series of workshops for the legal fraternity, the first of which shall take place in Pietermaritzburg in order to raise awareness of human trafficking and more importantly what can Lawyers do?
Lawyers and all in the legal fraternity are urged to participate in theses workshops. These workshops will be run throughout the country and shall be hosted by various NADEL Branches, with various experts presenting in this field. For further information, please contact: the NADEL National Gender Officer Harshna Munglee on 082 301 5984 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
