LSSA calls for holistic solution to problem of crime - Friday, May 09, 2008
The LSSA has called for an overhaul of the justice system to deal with the scourge of crime in South Africa. The LSSA has also expressed its concern at statements, such as those by Deputy Minister Shabangu, which may confuse members of the public into acting unlawfully or taking the law into their own hands.

LSSA makes submissions to Parliament on FICA Amendment Bill - Thursday, May 08, 2008
The LSSA has made submissions to the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Finance with regard to the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) Amendment Bill on behalf of the attorneys’ profession. The LSSA stressed that although the organised profession supported the broad social campaign against money laundering and terrorism, the Bill, if implemented, would represent a significant attack on basic rights. According to the LSSA, it could lead to members of the public losing confidence in the independence of the profession and the confidential nature of the relationship with attorneys. The LSSA urged Parliament to take such steps as are necessary to give recognition to the independence of the legal profession and the rule of law in the Bill.

SADC Lawyers Association resolutions from annual conference - Wednesday, July 04, 2007
The law societies -- including the Law Society of South Africa -- and bar association members of the SADC Lawyers Association met in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 22-23 June 2007 and resolved to canvass their various governments to strengthen the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary in SADC countries. The LSSA Technical Working Committee has made its report and draft Charter scorecards for the attorneys’ profession available for comment by attorneys. Attorneys are invited to send their comments to LSSA CEO Raj Daya at rajdaya@lssa.org.za or Fax: (012) 362 0969 by Friday, 14 March 2008.
