 Committees Minimize

The Law Society (LSSA) has a various committees that focus on the different branches of the law and legal practice. Members are full-time practicing attorneys and experts in particular fields of the law and form an integral part of the decision-making with regard to professional matters. These committees provide a valuable public service in the law reforms of our country. The committees makes representations to Parliament on proposed legislation . As a result of sustained activities, relevant legislation is often referred to the LSSA for comment before submitted to Parliament).

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee
It is accepted that in many instances, it is too expensive to go to the courts with disputes. There are alternatives to the courts and one thereof is alternative dispute resolution. Transfer of skills should be conducted through CLE seminars. Growing area of dispute resolution in the communities and charged with ensuring mechanism in place to promote interest of justice.  
Joint Committee with Accountants & Attorneys
Requirement of attorneys submitting audit certificates there will be a need to liaise with the auditors.

Communications Committee
Communicate to the public the advantages of using an attorneys and secondly to inform attorneys of developments.  
De Rebus Editorial Committee
Steering committee considers policy and articles for publication in the legal journal.  
Property Law Standing

Small Claims Court
The profession helps provide commissioners to these courts (115 throughout S.A), at no cost. These Courts ensure access to justice, to the community whereby claims less then R 10 000.00 are adjudicated. . The legal profession will seriously have to look to get many more practitioners from the previously disadvantaged communities serving in the small claims courts as commissioners.  
Tax Committee
Fills a critical watchdog role over tax matter as well as keeping the profession (and clients) and the public abreast of developments.  
Environmental Law Committee
A major area of development in law includes Land development and human rights of people regarding environmental justice.  
Constitutional Affairs Committee
Committee scrutinizes all legislation requiring input from the attorneys’ profession e.g. the Open Democracy Act and the Administrative Justice Act. Inputs are also made to Government to ensure that it complies with, and upholds, the constitution. The committee makes a significant contribution by providing access to justice to those who would otherwise be unable to exercise their constitutional right of having their cases dealt with by the appropriate forum. Competition Committee
Looks at various aspects to ensure fairness in the economy, currently looking at the new Act and considering the question of exemption for the attorneys’ profession.   read more...
Multi-Disciplinary Practices
Considers core values of the profession, profession will change drastically in the next few years and this committee tasked with providing guidance to the legal profession, and ensuring services to the public.  
Deceased Estates Committee
Important section of an attorney’s practice to promote the role of attorneys as administrators of estates as well promote the awareness by the members of the public of the necessity to have a will. Public function explicit.  
High Court Committee
Rules Board has now realised the importance of skilled input by attorneys in the activities of the Rules Board and that a working committee is being formed. Harmonization of the rules of the High and Magistrates Courts. Public function explicit.  
Personnel Injury Committee
Mainly MVA practitioners, highly specialized field of law, deal with public at large and have explicit public function.

Labour Law
Labour law is a growing field and the committee provides guidance to the profession in many instances like the Employment Equity Act, Skills Development Act, and amendments to existing Labour legislation and to ensure legal representation at the CCMA and Bargaining Councils. Legal Aid Committee
Ensures that the profession is represented on the Legal Aid Board. 900 justice centres are being established by the LAB, and will have to be monitored. Public function explicit.  
Legal Education Committee
Steering committee providing policy and guidelines for both Practical Legal Education and Continuing Legal Education.  
Liquor Matters Committee
The new National Act was found to be unconstitutional. Currently committee busy with provincial legislation, as poor administration of the present system will have to be addressed.  
Magistrates Court Committee
Need to engage the Rules Board in the promulgation of a simpler tariff assist the Rules Board in its deliberations and decisions. Public function explicit.

Ethics Committee
Need for a new code of Ethics for the attorneys profession. Ethics Committee was the conscience of the lawyers and that ethics was inter-twined with all aspects of the law. Public function explicit.  
Examination Committee
Includes drafting committee, to draft the examination papers for admittance to the attorneys profession and do the marking e.g. notaries. Reviews examination results and makes recommendations.  
Exchange Control & Tax Matters
Fills a critical watchdog role over tax matters as well as keeping the profession (and clients) and the public abreast of developments.

Gender Affairs Committee
Keeps the profession informed of developments in this critical area of transformation and ensure representation on all the structures, within the profession. Actively involved in the legal aspects of socio economic rights. Interacts with the human rights committee of the LSSA. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is often described as an international bill of rights for women.  
Human Rights & Constitutional Committee
Ensures the general interest of the public is on the main agenda of the profession Advises on the content of the human rights training universities. The committee is involved with both PLT and CLE. Also guides legal practitioners on the equality legislation.  
Insolvency Matters Committee
Deal with a new and comprehensive insolvency Act, and has made considerable advances in appointing liquidators from previously disadvantaged communities. Public function explicit.  
Intellectual Property
Specialized area of law dealing with copyright etc.
